Alexandria Transit Strategic Plan

Alexandria Transit Strategic Plan

The Alexandria Transit Strategic Plan (ATSP), formerly known as the Transit Development Plan (TDP), provides a comprehensive vision of future service development, fare adjustments, and capital investments for transit services within the City of Alexandria. The ATSP is based on guidelines and requirements outlined by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

The ATSP is updated each year by DASH (Alexandria Transit Company) and City of Alexandria staff, and is subject to annual public review, amendment, and adoption by DASH’s Board of Directors. This public comment period typically takes place in March, and the plan is approved by DASH’s at either the April or May Board meeting.

FY26 ATSP Update

DASH’s Board of Directors officially adopted the FY26 ATSP Update Addendum on June 11, 2025. This marks a minor update to the broader FY 2025–FY 2034 ATSP, which was originally approved in June 2024. The FY26 Update reaffirms ATC’s commitment to maintaining robust transit service while aligning with the City’s budgetary and strategic goals for the upcoming fiscal year (July 2025-June 2026).

Major highlights include:
  • No Service Reductions: DASH riders can expect the same level of service this fiscal year (July 2025-June 2026).

  • Better On-Time Performance: Major schedule improvements are coming to most routes to help buses run more reliably.

  • More Frequent Buses on Line 32: Buses between Landmark and Van Dorn Metro will come every 30 minutes instead of every hour during midday and evening hours.*

  • More Rush Hour Trips on Line 35: If you commute between West Alexandria and the Pentagon, you’ll see more frequent service during weekday peak times.**

  • Consistent 15-Minute Service on Line 36A/B: Thanks to continued Commuter Choice funding, these buses will keep running every 15 minutes all day, every day.**

  • Future Service Planned for Arlandria: DASH is planning to extend Line 34 in the next couple of years from Potomac Yard to Arlandria, making it easier to travel through this growing neighborhood. See DASH’s Arlandria Service Evaluation.

*Line 32 improvement funded by City Council supplemental funding authorization as part of City’s FY 26 budget approval process.

**Line 35 and Line 36A/B service enhancements funded by FY26-27 NVTC Commuter Choice grant funding program.
